When people ask what type of music I play, I am at somewhat of a loss on how to answer that question. Twenty to thirty years ago I used to say anything except country. I can no longer say that. Some of my music could arguably fit in a country genre and I really do like Willie Nelson. The lines of music genres have become blurred and I write and record what a feel rather than what fits a particular genre. That might be a mistake from a business perspective but it is real and it is how I can be true to myself.

The Process

All songs are recorded in my studio and are mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London. The first two albums consisted of my guitar, keyboards, and vocals. What about the drums and horns and the other sounds? I do not use prerecorded loops, but I do use sampled sounds of lots of different instruments. I will record those either my using them as a patch to the keyboard or by writing the score for the part. I know what I want and I can write a score but I am a horrible drummer and I can’t play the sax.

I almost always start with the music before the lyrics and it usually starts with guitar. I write almost everything on acoustic guitar whether the song is intended to have acoustic guitar or not. There is no particular reason that I do that other than convenience and it has just become habit at this point. While the guitar is forming, I usually will have a melody line forming with it (no lyrics, or at least not ones that make sense). The next is the drums and everything else layers on top of that.

Just because the lyrics come after the music doesn’t mean they are just fill or are less important. They are at least equal in importance if not even more so than the music. The lyrics are another form of what I share when writing books. My intent is that there is clearly a message in the lyrics but they are intentionally open to interpretation and I feel no need or value in sharing my particular motivation for what inspired the lyrics for me at this point. My motivation or meaning in the song may not be what you think and what you think is far more important to you. If you want to know my meaning or motivation, let me know.

History

Music has been my heart and soul from a very early age. I did not have musical parents or siblings so I am sure where it came from but I am sure glad it’s here. I have had to good fortune of having played in many of the 50 states and Canada and played some pretty great venues with and for some great people.

I started playing in bars when I was about 15. The world was a different place and I feel very fortunate to be able to have had that start. Imagine having your parent drop you off at the bar to play a gig because you weren’t even old enough to drive. I played in a lot of bands over the years and spent a number of years full-time on the road. My live gigs stopped when my back got back enough that I couldn’t haul my share of equipment and it became a struggle to stand for 4 hours. It was really hard to give that up and I would like to think that someday I might be able to play gigs again.

Regardless of the live gigs, I never stop playing. There are very few days that go by without be picking up a guitar and playing something. The writing and recording that has taken a backseat for too long took off after retiring from my corporate position. As big as music is and has been to me, I have had very diverse experiences; the About Me page offers more than you probably want to know.

What’s Next

I have started work on the third album but this one is taking a little longer. I have put a lot of time into books in this last year so that has taken considerable time in my schedule. It has also been a bit different writing because I am planning to have a “guest” singer on the album. I worked with him many years ago and am looking forward to someone else’s talent being interjected into the mix. I find myself trying to write for what I believe would fit his style but then again I haven’t heard him sing in over 30 years. It is January of 2022 now as I am writing this so I realistically expect that it will be summer before the first vocal tracks are down and maybe near the end of the year before a complete album. I may release a song or two prior to the album. I will update this site and the Sorenson Studios FB page as the work progresses.
